“It is no accident that things are more likely to go your way when you stop worrying about whether you’re going to win or lose and focus your full attention on what’s happening in the moment.” (Phil Jackson)
We can adapt a lot from sports to our business and private lives when it comes to reaching our goals. No matter if you are an executive striving to become a more conscious leader, to enhance performance and employee satisfaction or someone working on the next career step.
Vision
What is it that you really want? Is it truly your goal or somebody else’s goal? Is there a goal behind the goal? When your vision becomes crystal clear you start visualising how the outcome would be like and how you would feel, once it is accomplished. How does this idea make you feel?
Preparation
Let curiosity lead you now to explore what it needs to get there. What is it you need to accomplish one by one to be where you want to be? What does it need for you to actually follow through? What is your plan if things become challenging? Who can hold you accountable to make significant progress and step out of your comfort zone? Who can mentor you, who can support you? What are your exact plans for the next weeks and months? When will you begin and put first things first?
Execution
You are prepared. You have a plan. You do what you intended to do. When you stumble along the way, you figure out other strategies, just like great athletes do when they realise during a match that they need to change their game in order to succeed.
In Summary
Experiencing challenges on your way should not define you but how you deal with them. Do not let mistakes define you. Did you know: Walt Disney was fired from a local newspaper for not being creative enough. Anna Wintour was fired from her first job as a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar. It is crucial to understand that challenges and setbacks are part of the learning process. Be patient, continue putting effort and continue to believe in your potential.
Currently, I am working on some huge goals myself and find the process very enriching. So what is it you want to accomplish?
